A greenhouse for the green and white!

I am incredibly excited about an interdisciplinary project that our students have embarked on this fall and what it can mean for our learners of the future. Throughout the fall months, students have been busy building a new greenhouse funded by the Winthrop Education Corporation (WEC). Students in our Horticulture and Building Construction classes, under the direction of Mr. Fecteau and Mr. MacArthur respectively, have been working tirelessly constructing a new greenhouse for our school. Members of both classes have been involved in the planning, design, construction of a building located behind our concession/storage garage. This opportunity has allowed our learners to work as a team in both our Science and Technology Education departments. The goal is to have this building complete prior to the Winter months to allow for students to begin growing food to be used in our School Nutrition Program and the community at-large.

I am really excited for this opportunity for students observe how food it is grown, where it comes from, and eventually how it is served to them.  I anticipate that many great things will come from this. Again, many thanks to the Winthrop Education Corporation in supporting our students in Winthrop.

Making a Difference

What a great week for Winthrop High School!

- Members of our Student Council continue to impress us with their efforts in organizing our annual food drive for Make a Difference Day, October 24th. Our students were able to listen to members of our student body and faculty this week in their involvement in volunteerism. Mr. Stoneton has organized a food drive at the last three home Football games and we are well on our way of collecting our goal of 2,000 pounds of food to donate to the Winthrop Food Pantry. We appreciate the help of our community in supporting our efforts to give back to the local community.

-As we continue our transition to Proficiency Based Education at Winthrop High School, members of Gray/New Gloucester High School and their Board of Education were able to meet with us this past week. Much of our discussion focused on elements that we were proud of as a school and district. As we continue our venture, I will be holding quarterly meetings with our parents and the community with additional updates surrounding our transition. Please stay tuned….

-As we wrap up our fall seasons in athletics, we recognize how important it is to thank and honor our athletes and their coaches for all of the hard work that they dedicate to their respective sports. We appreciate your efforts and know that as our Ramblers step on any playing surface they not only represent Winthrop, but also are ambassadors of our fantastic High School. We are fortunate to have parents and community members that continue to support us in our endeavors and thank you! Best of luck to our lady Ramblers in participating in the Field Hockey Championships this Tuesday, October 21st. Congratulations to the members of our golf team and Coach Steeves on winning the State Class C title!

I am tremendously excited to be back at school and entering the 2014-15 school year.  As the start of my third year as WHS Principal, I am eager to introduce a new "Principal's Blog" to our website. My intention is to post weekly updates about the great  things that are happening at our High School that are at times published, but always deserve recognition. I am also eager to use this blog as a venue to get important information out to students, parents and our community regarding academic and social events.
I look forward to meeting and speaking with all of you and hope that you take the opportunity to review my weekly blog about our success at Winthrop High School.
